Lady Panthers' miracle undo Lady Tornadoes in OT
Philander Smith University Senior Miracle Thomas knocked down a heavily contested three-pointer with less than three seconds remaining in overtime as the Lady Panthers knocked off upset-minded Talledega Lady Tornadoes 70-69.
For the evening, Thomas scored 17 points and grabbed eight rebounds, mostly in the fourth and overtime periods, for the Lady Panthers, who were led in scoring by fellow senior Samya Johnson's 18 points. It was Johnson's play in the closing seconds of regulation that helped the Lady Panthers send the contest into overtime. Johnson was found in the paint during a chaotic defensive attack by the Lady Tornadoes in the waning seconds and converted the layup to tie the game at 63. It was a back-and-forth affair in the extra period before Thomas closed it out with her miraculous trey.
Also scoring in double figures for the Lady Panthers was Ashlyn Kimble, who tallied 14 points, six rebounds, four assists, and five steals.
The Lady Tornadoes' Ceara Myers led all scorers with 19 points and nine rebounds.
