Shay Johnson Claims GCAC Player of the Week

NEW ORLEANS, La. – Lady Bearcats guard Shay Johnson had a dominant week and was promptly recognized, being voted the conference's women's basketball player of the week.

Johnson, a senior from Byhalia, Mississippi, shot 39.5% (17-of-43) while averaging 17.7 points, 6.0 free throws made, 5.7 assists and 5.3 rebounds per game during an undefeated week with wins over Oakwood, Cumberland, and Tennessee Wesleyan.

In the overtime win against Cumberland, she nearly logged a triple-double with 32 points, nine boards and seven assists as well as 14 free throws to lead all scorers.

For the week she totaled 53 points, 18 made free throws, 17 assists, 16 rebounds, three steals, a block and a three-pointer.

Boyd, Booker, and the rest of Coach Benjy Taylor's squad will begin its quest for a title on November 12-13 when it battles both Union (Tenn.) and Shorter in DeLand, Tennessee in the South Region Crossover Classic.

Johnson and the rest of the gang will make the short journey to Itta Bena, Mississippi for an exhibition against NCAA Division I foe Mississippi Valley State on Wednesday evening before returning to the W.A. McMillan Center to take on LeMoyne-Owen on Saturday at 5:30 p.m.
